King of beasts
There once was a time in a far away jungle were wild beasts decided to choose the best out of all of the animal species to rule over all of them. Of course each wild beast species thought them all above the other beasts, so stuck on the thought they consulted a wise owl on what to do. Monkey elected himself to go and ask the owl.
'Oh great and noble flight of night, the wisest of any beasts, what might we do in our crisis?'
The owl opened one eye and replied, 'We shall set up three challenges, and all who wish to compete, who who, shall send their best and bravest one here at midnight.'
This contented the beasts, and they all agreed on the thought that anyone who didn't want to work to become King, was not fit to be King. The parrots, which are by far the most chattering beasts, spread the news from one end to the other and the Jackal, Lion, Monkey, and Hare's sent their bravest to the owl's tree. (there is only one owl in this jungle) and there, they waited for midnight.
When midnight finally arrived, Owl came out of his tree and declared,
'On the opposite end of the jungle I have placed three bracelets. One made out of gold and set with sapphires, another made out of steel and set with rubies, and a third, made out of brass and set with flint.
Whoever brings back the gold bracelet set with sapphires will become closer to being King. You have until the morrow's midnight to complete this task.'
At once the beasts set off, and Monkey with the hare quickly fell behind. The hare, who quickly found a hole and began to dig to the other side of the jungle opposite of Owl's tree, soon left Monkey who decided to swing from the trees, and he soon was behind Lion, who was in the lead. Jackal fell behind, but was clever, more clever than Owl, and veered towards the elephant's eating ground,
'For when I am King, I will not have to go anywhere on my own four legs.' he thought. On the way there, he grabbed some tall grass and bamboo and made a large trap. Then set off to the elephant feeding ground anew. Once there, he used his bamboo trap and waited for an elephant to come and in an instance the elephant cried,
'Oh, help me! Help me before I becomes man's tool!'
And the Jackal sprang out and declared,
'Oh great and powerful beast, I will free you only if you promise to take me to the other side of the jungle, opposite to Owl's tree.'
The elephant consulted and Jackal removed his trap and rode the beast to the other side of the jungle. And at the other side of the jungle, the Lion and Hare arrived. Both spotted the gold bracelet and the Hare picked it up. Angry, the Lion roared, frightening the Hare, who dropped the gold bracelet. The Lion at once put on the gold bracelet and started back to the Owl's tree. The Hare began to reach for either remaining bracelets but was frightened by the trumpet of an Elephant. Jackal jumped off of his ride and picked up the steel bracelet, put it on, and started off to the Owl's tree. And before Hare could make a move, Monkey swooped in and took the brass bracelet. Poor Hare had to without a bracelet.
Back at the Owl's tree at midnight Owl comes out.
'Hare, you are now not able to compete. And Lion, you are close to being King.' Hare looked down and sulked away.
'Lion, Jackal, and Monkey. Your next task is to go into the desert and look for two rings. One is made of gold and set with a sapphire, and the other made of steel and set with a ruby.
Your task ends on the morrow's morrow's midnight. (the day after tomorrow.) Good luck to all three of you.'
Jackal race off to the desert, happy to be going to his own domain and Lion was close to his tail. Monkey followed but got his hands and feet burned. Jackal quickly found and put on the gold ring and raced off. Lion got there and put on the steel ring. Monkey arrive on the second day's morn, and was very disappointed so he died in the desert out of anger. Back at Owl's, on midnight of the second day, Jackal and Lion waited. Owl came out of his tree and called to them,
'Between you two you must decide who deserves this gold crown set with sapphires and rubies.'
Lion looked at Jackal and with one blow of his mighty paw, slayed him. The Owl told a parrot,
'Tell all of the beasts, the Lion, is king of them.
